  • Classic Polish Globe Weights

  • Great equipment practically begs to be used and I would say that would definitely be the case here. These classic Globe Barbells, Dumbbells, Kettlebells and Blockweights from a century ago can be found in a Polish Museum.

  • German Weightlifting Club ~ 1905

  • A German weightlifting club circa 1905 with a selection of classic equipment. Of note are the large and rather impressive kettlebells. If you are familiar with your kettlebell history you know that the Germans were particularly fond of kettlebell juggling which is the reason for the squared off handles.

  • Black Iron Strength Kettlebells

  • Kettlebells are pretty common these days but you probably haven't seen anything like these before: precision diamond-point knurled handles, polished stainless steel, 25 ton press through construction AND made in the USA.

These kettlebells were made by Black Iron Strength the same folks who make our thick bars. Of course the inevitable question is going to be "How do they compare to cast iron kettlebells?"

The answer is "they don't" - both styles are good but in their own way and for different reasons. We may carry these at some point in the future...

  • Chinese Stone Lock Exercises

  • A look at an original chinese source detailing some of the many exercises which can be done with stone padlocks. They share many similar movements with kettlebells, but, as you can see, there's a lot more to stone lock training than that.

  • Ring Weights

  • One of the most interesting pieces of training equipment often used by many of the oldtime strongmen were ring weights. An early version of the kettlebell, ringweights were most often used for a variety of training techniques including throwing, such as in the Scottish Highland Games (in which the 56-pound weight for height is contested) as well as the popular oldtime lift "the muscle out."

  • Kettlebells in Iran, circa 1897

  • Kettlebells are thought by many people to be uniquely Russian. While there is no question that they have very strong roots there, kettlebells have a long tradition in other areas of the world as well. This rare picture was taken in Iran, circa 1897, showing these practitioners of 'Vaezesh-e Pahlavani' (Iranian Martial Arts) who obviously use them as a part of their training. The text offers no explanation as to why they are fastened together by ropes.

Also of note are the Kaebade (i.e. Iron Bows) at their feet. That unique training tool is swung from one shoulder to the other, building upper-body strength.

  • Ancient Russian Kettlebells

  • Ancient KettlebellsAncient Russian Kettlebells

Kettlebells go back pretty far... but not as far as people think...

Before kettlebells were ever used as weight training tools they were simply used as handled weights to sit on a scale to weigh out dry goods. These kettlebells are direct from "Mother Russia" and are well over 150 years old. -- Note the Imperial seal.
