  • Leg Press!

  • Now this is crazy, both in theory and in practice. That's Harry Good performing a 1-leg press with 280 pounds. His best was 380 pounds for 3 reps. It was also mentioned that while performing this lift, Harry was able to get the loaded barbell onto and off of his foot unassisted.

  • Gord Venables ~ The Overhead Squat

  • A look at one of the original "York Gang" Gord Venables as he demonstrates the overhead squat, a movement you will have to master if you want to become an Olympic Weightlifter. At that contest, Gord finished third with a 710 pound total (behind Ellwood Holbrook and Bill Bush of Cincinnati).

For years, Veenables also had a monthly column in Strength and Health Magazine entitled "Incredible But True!" which highlighted amazing feats of strength throughout history and the world.

  • The Russian Olympic Set

  • One of the interesting things that you would find in the old strength magazines was Olympic sets from some of the different countries - and they did a fine job. pictured here is a famous Russian Olympic set brought in by Leo Stern for use in his gym. Oh yeah, that's also Pat Casey 'unofficially' bench pressing 525 pounds.

  • Cross-Grip Training

  • 1948 Mr. America George Eiferman demonstrates a very interesting looking technique: Cross-Grip Training. These are just a few of the exercises which have been mentioned, you can use this technique with many others, and this is certainly a way of hitting your muscles from a new angle. I would imagine that it takes some getting used to though...

  • The Close Grip Curl

  • The close grip curl is an excellent variation on the basic movement. Grasp the barbell with hands no more than six inches apart, preferably touching. It is more difficult to curl in this position so less weight must be used.

  • Clyde Emrich Front squattting

  • Weightlifting great Clyde Emrich front squatting at a sport school just before the 1955 World Championships in Munich, Germany. The front squat is a great power builder. Some men prefer to do this exercise with a 2-inch board under the heels. Regardless, it is an exercise that must be mastered if you want to become an Olympic weightlifter.

  • The Front Squat

  • The Front SquatThe Front Squat

One useful variation of the squat is the front squat, where the bar is held on the front of the shoulders instead of on the back (hence the name). This exercise is one of the most effective supplmentary exercises for Olympic weightlifting as it builds leg power coming out of the clean.

Speaking of Olympic Weightlifters, in the picture that's Dave Ashman front squatting 435-pounds at Muscle Beach in the 1950s. Ashman was a three-time Sr.National weightlifting champ (1957, 1958, 1959) and briefly held world records in both the snatch and clean and jerk.

A look at the Kennedy Lift in action - performed by Quebec Strongman Claude "Samson" Champagne. The Kennedy lift can be a useful alternative to the traditional deadlift and many oldtimers swore by it. Nice lift - that's over 600 pounds!

  • The Stiff-Leg DeadliftThe Stiff-Leg DeadliftThe Stiff-Leg Deadlift is a very, very effective power-building exercise that is seldom seen theses days.

It is performed just like it sounds, and is shown here in mid-movement by the great Oldtime Strongman Michael Mayer, who was one of the first men to jerk 300 pounds overhead.

  • The Barbell Pullover

  • The Barbell PulloverSteve Stanko Demonstrates
    The Barbell Pullover
It used to be that benches didn't have uprights on them which mean if you wanted to do "the bench press" (or the supine press, as it was originally called), you had to do a pullover off the floor with the weight to get it in the proper position.

... And it was found that the pullover by itself turned out to be a fine exercise.

That's Mr. America and Mr. Universe winner Steve Stanko demonstrating the barbell pullover off a 16" bench with 322 pounds -- pretty impressive!

  • Curling With Casey Viator

  • Casey ViatorCasey ViatorCasey Viator was easily one of the strongest bodybuilders of all time -- here he is curling 225 pounds during one of his workouts.

There was no secret to Casey's success -- basic exercises trained at an intensity level that has to be seen to be believed.

Don't let anyone tell you curls are a worthless exercise -- building stronger biceps will help with a stronger "pull" and also balance out tricep development which means stronger presses.

...All worthwhile goals for every strength athlete.

  • The Barbell RowThe Barbell RowIf you want to be a great overhead presser, you must build the pulling muscles as well.

Here weightlifting Champ Doug Hepburn demonstrates one of the very best upper-body builders -- the rowing exercise (so named because it resembles rowing a boat.)

You'll find this exercise recommended by all of the great strength training authors.

The standing barbell press is a great lift -- one of the simplest, and one of the best -- for building upper-body power.

This exercise should be a part of your program.
