  • Zuver's Gym Barbell Plates

  • Bob Zuver liked to do everything up BIG at his gym... he had the world's biggest squat rack (over 10 feet tall), the world's longest dipping station (12 feet long), dumbbells up to 320 pounds, the World's biggest rope climb, the world's biggest bench press (which weighed 650 pounds) and even a fire hose for a drinking fountain.

Shown here is a closer look at Zuver's unique barbell plates, which were, unsurprisingly, also BIG... as you can see, they were in 50-pound, 100-pound, 150-pound and 200-pound denominations.

  • Iron Grip Barbell Plates

  • If you ever wondered which company is the last to manufacture and produce barbells and weight plates on US soil then your answer is the Iron Grip Barbell company of Santa Ana, California. They introduced this unique 12-sided weight plate in 1993.

I like these plates a lot, you can actually use them for many interesting exercises by themselves. Iron Grip also makes a damn fine bar.

  • My Garage Gym

  • I snapped this shot of one corner of my garage gym during last night's workout. Thought it looked kind of nifty - and yes, these aren't for show, everything gets used.

  • Winter Training

  • You think a few inches of snow is cause to miss any workouts? Not by a long shot. This was the view of the backyard lifting platform a few Winters back. Yes, those are 200-pound sewer caps drilled out for use as barbell plates.

  • Paramount Olympic Sets

  • York was always the standard as far as quality Olympic barbell sets... but Muscletown was a long way for some folks to travel. Out on the West coast, a lot of people got their start with Paramount barbells and plates.

  • York Barbells

  • A selection of York Barbells and dumbbells in a classic wooden rack. They were marketed as "second to none" and they were. Notice the plates are positioned on the bars to minic a globe shape.

  • Milo Steinborn

  • Milo SteinbornMilo Steinborn

During the first World War, Milo Steinborn was captured and held in a British Prisoner of War camp in Australia. It was there where he began his intense focus on strength training.

Milo and the men of the prison camp rigged up a set of weights using cement blocks and a type of very hard wood.

Two and a half inch water pipes were used for bars and collars were made by inserting set screws into sections of larger pipes. Milo trained with that set for over two years and, worked up to nearly 500 pounds in the squat.

  • John Davis - Pinch Grip Feat

  • John Davis had a mighty grip to go along with his incredible strength. -- He would need a pretty terrific grip to lift the Apollon wheels.

Davis could also perform three one-arm chinups with either hand. Pictured here is Two-time Olympic Gold Medal Winning Weightlifter John Davis performing a unique grip feat: pinching a pair of York "Deep Dish" 35-pound barbell plates.

Not many people practice pinch gripping, or gripping a smooth surface with the fingers extended.

Pinch gripping modern barbell plates is hard enough, what Davis is doing here is very impressive considering those particular plates are twice as wide as any barbell plates you'll find these days.
