    During the first World War, Milo Steinborn was captured and held in a British Prisoner of War camp in Australia. It was there where he began his intense focus on strength training.

    Milo and the men of the prison camp rigged up a set of weights using cement blocks and a type of very hard wood.

    Two and a half inch water pipes were used for bars and collars were made by inserting set screws into sections of larger pipes. Milo trained with that set for over two years and, worked up to nearly 500 pounds in the squat.

    Check out this wood engraving of a classic gymnasium: It was the YMCA at Longacre, London. This particular gymnasium was opened by the Prince of Wales on June 16, 1888.

    Notice the variety of physical training going on: Indian Clubs, Tumbling, Parallel Bars, High Bar, Pommel Horse, Wall Pulleys, Climbing Ladders, Gymnastic Rings, Climbing Ropes and a rack of Barbells along the wall.

    You've got to hand it to the oldtime strongmen, they didn't mess around when it came to quality equipment. How strong do you think you could get if you were training with the globe barbells, globe dumbbells, blockweights etc, in the above picture?

    If you want to get strong and I mean STRONG you have to have good training equipment and that's just how it is.

    It all begins with a quality barbell, good plates and a solid pair of collars. If you have nothing else, you must have at least that much. From there, add other equipment as needed.

    Other equipment that will help you tremendously includes a solid bench, dumbbells, a power rack, a Gerard Trap Bar, chest expanders, Thick Bars, Hand Grippers and anything else that you will find on our Strongman Equipment Page.
