Here's something you don't see every day, Ironman Magazine Volume 1, Number 6. The first few issues (this being one of them) were produced by Peary Rader on an old mimeograph machine. Only about 50 copies of each were ever printed up so needless to say they are pretty hard to come by. Weightlifter Bill Good graces the cover.

Never Miss a Workout! - The Olympic weightlifting team continued to train even while sailing aboard the SS Manhattan traveling to Berlin for the 1936 Olympic Games. Bill Good is shown practicing his jerks while the other members wait their turn. You want core strength? Try holding a heavy weight overhead while on a ship.

The Good Dumbbell, so named for it's former owner Bill Good is the world's heaviest exhibition dumbbell (weighing 2150 pounds.) You can read more about it here. For a number of years the Good Dumbbell was displayed on this stand at a water company near Adamstown, Pennsylvania. You used to be able to go visit it although it has disappeared in recent years and the current whereabouts are unknown.

One of the most interesting pieces of historical weightlifting equipment is the Good Dumbbell. This dumbbell which weighs 2150 pounds, once belonged to Warren Lincoln Travis.
It was later purchased by the great weightlifter Bill Good which is where it got its name. Bill Good was fond of harness lifting this great dumbbell to build leg strength, as pictured in the above photo. In fact, he used to do so to celebrate his birthday, lifting the bell for each year of his age, a practice he regularly upheld well into his 90s.

The Good BrothersThe Good Brothers, Harry, Walter and Bill, were a trio of weightlifters and Strongmen from Eastern Pennsylvania. Bill was the strongest of the three, winning seven Senior National Weightlifting Titles (1930-1937) and competing in two Olympic Games (1932 Los Angeles, 1936 - Berlin). Bill Good was the first American to Clean & Jerk 350 Pounds.
Walter Good competed in the 1936 Olympics as well.
Harry was the U.S. Professional Champion in 1933 in addition to writing training articles for a number of different strength publications and training courses. Harry Good went on to establish the "Good Barbell Company" in the late 1930s.
Mark Berry also used the Good Brothers to demonstrate several of the exercises in his book Physical Training Simplified (1930).
