  • The Front Bridge

  • The Back Bridge gets a lot of press but the Front Bridge, as demonstrated here by John Grimek, is also a very good exercise choice for building neck strength". Both exercises are discussed in detail in Combat Conditioning by Matt Furey.

  • Early Physical Training

  • Some of the early physical training "gyms" looked a lot like this one; essentially a big playground. The idea was to simply get your body moving in a number of ways. Notice all the different training methods represented in this rare engraving: balance beams, pole climbing, climbing ropes, the vault horse, climbing ladders, parallel bars, horizontal bars and bodyweight calisthenics.

Even with more modern methods - I'm talking with barbells and dumbbells etc - Getting out and learning to move your body through space in a vigorous manner is still a good idea today.

  • Pull-Ups

  • Pull-Ups... Chin-Ups... whatever you want to call them they are a great exercise... And you can't beat the simplicity. This Marine is performing his pull-ups during a 2005 deployment to Camp Taqaddum, Iraq as a part of the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab's experimental "combat conditioning" physical training program.

  • Pushups

  • With the many ways of training out there the simple pushup is still a great exercise choice. They can be done anywhere, require no special equipment and can be trained progressively by adjusting the form.

Shown here is the great oldime strongman Earle E. Liederman demonstrating pushups in one of his classic courses. Liederman and many of the other early strength authors often prescribed a mixture of bodyweight calisthenics and barbell/dumbbell training since the two styles of training compliment each other very effectively.

  • The God of Wrestling: Karl Gotch

  • Karl Gotch was known as 'The God of Wrestling' in Japan and he is still regularly featured in Japanese wrestling magazines. It's with good reason, every major star in the Japanese professional wrestling and 'shootfighting' scene, had roots in Karl Gotch's training which focused heavily on bodyweight conditioning and calisthenics. You can find out more about it here.

  • Karl Gotch: The God of Pro Wrestling

  • Karl Gotch a very good amateur wrestler and an even better Professional wrestler after learning the "tricks of the trade" at Billy Riley's "Snake Pit" Gym in Wigan, England.

In Japan he was known as "The God of Pro Wrestling" and many of the most famous Japanese wrestlers are among his students.

What he was even more famous for though was his conditioning -- it was his feeling (and rightfully so) that as a combat athlete "Conditioning is your best hold."

He incorporated a number of elements into his training including rope climbing, bodyweight calisthenics, wrestling drills, muscle control and traditional indian physical culture exercises.

Gotch once did 9001 straight Hindu Squats to best a training feat by The Great Gama.
