The Back Bridge gets a lot of press but the Front Bridge, as demonstrated here by John Grimek, is also a very good exercise choice for building neck strength". Both exercises are discussed in detail in Combat Conditioning by Matt Furey.

One important thing to keep in mind about strength training is that much of the "secret" of getting very strong does not have to do with exotic lifts that you never heard of before but basic lifts that you probably already know, just done correctly with plenty of effort. Here's a great example: want to know how the great strongman Clevio Massimo developed his incredible arm strength? "One-arm Pushups" ~ an exercise you can do pretty-much anywhere.

The great boxer Sonny Liston used to strengthen his neck by doing a headstand on a table and working his body back and forth then left and right, in order to hit all four "sides" of the neck.
I can say from experience that this a very effective movement.
This picture was taken in 1962 while Liston was in training to face Floyd Patterson for the Heavyweight Championship of the World. In the fight, Liston knocked out Patterson in the first round and then did so again in the rematch the next year. - He was a bad man.

The Handstand Press | A simple yet very effective exercises is the handstand press. The boxes are there, of course, to increase the range of motion. This was a favorite exercise of the great weightlifting champion Tony Terlazzo (pictured here) who used it to increase his barbell overhead press. Terlazzo was a 13-time Weightlifting national Champion, something to think about if you're working on your press too. |

An incredibly rare snapshot from the training of George Hackenschmidt. In addition to lifting, road work, and wrestling practice, Hack also liked to climb telephone poles to build his upper-body strength. "Hugging" the telephone pole built the perfect kind of strength for throwing and grappling. His training partner Dr. Roller looks on in amazement.

The wrestler's bridge is a great exercise, but it isn't for everyone. Regardless, one of the areas that you should pay particular attention to building is the strength of your neck. Here's the course that taught me how to bridge correctly: Combat Conditioning.

The Press-UpThe Press-Up is an intermediate handbalancing movement that you must master of you want to move on to more advanced moves.
Be sure not to straighten your legs too quickly or it will cause you to lose your balance and fall foreward. Practice and master this move on parallettes before moving on to the bare floor. (You can find our more tips on this move on page 32 of Bill Hinbern's Handbalancing for Muscular Development.)
