  • Lung and Muscle Culture by Paul Von Boeckmann

  • A look at Paul Von Boeckmann's highly unique Lung and Muscle Culture Course. His big thing was Breathing Gymnastics in relation to muscular development. This certainly makes a lot of sense, the more oxygen you can get to the muscles, the stronger they will be. Also of note is the fact that this is the 12th edition - most strength books rarely make it to a second reprinting.

  • "Breathing is the Vital Force of Life"

  • It was Paul Von Boeckmann's view that while many physical culturists and strongmen might be well developed from a muscular standpoint, the greater likelihood was that they were severely lacking in the cardiovascular department. -- This was back in the teens and twenties mind you -- and, unfortunately, still just as true today. If you want to be a complete strength athlete, don't neglect your conditioning.

  • Paul Von BoeckmannPaul Von BoeckmannAn ad for the famous oldtime strongman Paul Von Boeckmann's Breathing Gymnastics Course.

Von Boeckmann felt that one of the Secrets to great strength and physical development had much to do with building large, powerful lungs through breathing exercises and taught these techniques by mail order for years.

  • George Eiferman's Favorite Strength Feat

  • George Eiferman was the 1948 AAU Mr. America and 1962 IFBB Mr. Universe winner and was particularly well-known for his chest development.

On of the ways in which he built such a deep and impressive chest was regular trumpet playing.

Eiferman used to like to show off a bit too and was fond of playing the "Hawaiian War Chant" on his trumpet with one hand while holding a loaded barbell overhead with the other. -- Talk about core strength.

He regularly performed this feat at Muscle Beach.

  • Walt Baptiste

  • In 1934, Walt Baptist and his wife Magana established the first training center of its kind, which combined the disciplines of physical culture, yoga, weight training, meditation, and breathing exercises.

Walt and his wife also appeared on the cover of many bodybuilding magazines in the 1940s and 1950's such as Strength and Health and Iron Man Magazine.

For a while, he even had his own physical culture magazine, Body Moderne, pictured here.

  • An Impressive Card Ripping Feat

  • Paul Von Boeckman was famous for his course on breathing exercises and chest expansion methods but his grip strength prowess was equally impressive.

He could one-arm chin himself three times with the middle finger of his right hand and also had an 80-pound indian club that few strongmen were able to even budge.

Now, a lot of strongmen can rip a deck of playing cards... but can they do this? Only someone with fingers as strong as Von Boeckmann could ever dream of it.
