  • Ell Darden Neck Training

  • Like many young trainees, Ellington Darden wanted to build size and strength, but unlike many of his peers, he wanted a bigger neck to go with a bigger pair of big arms. Throughout junior high and high school, he focused specifically on his neck work, primarily using the wreslter's bridge and a Neck Helmet. He continued this neck program in college, which was ecpecially important while playing football. It paid off... When he graduated from Baylor University in 1966, Ell sported a genuine 18-inch neck, at a bodyweight of 215 pounds.

  • Neck Training

  • Physical training was frowned upon for many years by the medical community but there were still many athletes who understood its value, even way back when. Here's a fellow who did: Chalmer William "Bill" Cissell, who was playing infield for the Chicago White Sox at the time this photo was taken.

Cissell regularly trained at the gym in the winter months to keep himself fit and trim for the season. This was back in the late 1920's mind you. Among the basic exercises he chose for his workout was this novel way to build neck strength using a Wall Pulley

  • Melvin Tampke: Wrestler's Bridge Press

  • Here's Melvin Tampke in action once again, this time performing a press with a classic globe barbell from the Wrestler's Bridge position. It would be a very good idea to master the bridge with only bodyweight before moving on to an exercise like this. Doing so, however, will help build a stronger neck as well as tremendous full-body strength.

  • Got Neck?

  • If you want to look strong (not to mention also be strong) then you had better train your neck. This fellow, a football player at the University of Tennessee Martin, named Hunter Carter had some help from Mother Nature in that department but he also did quite a bit of work with a Neck Helmet which obviously paid off. You'll find him featured in the July, 1976 issue of Muscular Development Magazine in an article on neck training by Carl H. Giles.

  • Farmer Burns on the Wrestler's Bridge

  • "I wish to impress upon all my students the great value of physical training connected with the bridge exercise. I want you to practice bridging every day, for you can find nothing that will develop the neck and back muscles to such an extent as bridging will do.

You already realize the importance of a very strong neck and it is entirely up to you to have a wonderful neck or not, depending entirely on the amount of study, and time of practice that you give the subject.

A strong, well-developed neck is not only valuable to health and your personal athletic appearance, but important in wrestling as well."

  • The Wrestler's Bridge Pullover and Press

  • The Wrestler's Bridge Pullover and PressThe Wrestler's Bridge Pullover and PressHere's a pretty good exercise for building neck strength that you won't see much any more: the wrestler's bridge pullover and press.

Jim Murray, managing editor of Strength and Health Magazine is shown here performing the lift with a 200 pound York set.

It was reported that he was able to go up as high as 250 pounds on this lift, a very impressive accomplishment.

  • Kong

  • The man known only as Kong, who claimed to have the world's strongest neck, lifts 502 pounds. Another unuaual feat of strength which he performed was having a partner smash bricks laying on his neck with a sledge hammer. Interestingly, he was also a vegetarian.

  • The Hammer Strength Neck Machine

  • Everyone should train their neck, but it is especially important if you play football. The Hammer Strength neck machine is the best one I have ever used -- and I've tried 'em all. Do it strict with no monkey business and you'll go up a few collar sizes in no time.
