  • Harry Truman's 1948 White House Gym

  • In honor of President's Day and all, I thought you might be interested in seeing Harry Truman's gym in the White House, circa 1948.

It is sparse, but certainly contains everything someone would need to stay in shape: medicine balls, Swedish Bars, Wall Pulleys, Gymnastic Rings, Rowing machine, health rider bike, situp board, and a rack of dumbbells (more of which are out of the frame.)

  • A unique look at some of the equipment once belonging to Harry Shafran and housed in his great gym. Much of what is shown here was previously owned by Warren Lincoln Travis. The whereabouts of this equipment is currently unknown.

  • The Michigan State Normal School Gymnasium, Ypsilanti, Michigan, 1894

  • A look at The Michigan State Normal School Gymnasium in Ypsilanti, Michigan, circa 1894, the year it was built. This impressive red brick building was located across the street from the Water Tower in Ypsilanti (and if you have been to Ypsi, you know exactly where this is).

This gymnasium was divided completely in half, the North half reserved for women and the South half for men. The Michigan State Normal School eventually became Eastern Michigan University, and unfortunately, this particular building was demolished in the mid-1960s.

  • Here's a unique opportunity to take a look at Dr. Vladislav Von Krajewski's Gym in St. Petersburg, Russia, circa 1901. This is the place where an untold number of strength champions trained, most notably George Hackenschmidt. I know that I could sure get strong in a place like this.

  • Marine Gym

  • A buddy of mine is over in Iraq at the moment and sent me this great picture of the gym on his base. Good to know that the men and women of our armed services at least have a good place to train while over there. Interestingly, despite the extreme conditions, this setup is not all that different than many of the great gyms of the past. You certainly wouldn't need much more than what is pictured here to get damn strong - and you gotta love that badass Helicopter in the background.

  • A look into the legendary "Zuvers Hall of Fame Gym" run by the Reverend Bob Zuver in Costa Mesa, California. With a variety of unusual training equipment and an even more unusual atmosphere, anyone who ever trained there sure never forgot it.

In the background, you can just make out the 'World's largest Squat Rack" and the "World's Largest Dipping Rack." Also of note are the distinctive Zuver Barbell plates to the left of the picture.

Here's some classic Kettlebells, Ring Weights and Globe Barbells. Sig luckily inherited much of the equipment when he married Professor Attila's daughter.

  • Bill Pearl's Gym

  • In 1962, Bill Pearl moved to Los Angeles and took over George Redpath's gym in east L.A. Bill actually had several other health clubs previously in Northern California. Rather than spread himself too thin, he closed the other locations to concentrate on making this new centralized location the best it could possible be. -- Bill took a great deal of care in doing things first class.

The newly re-named "Bill Pearl's Gym" became one of the hotspots for bodybuilding and weightlifting out on the west coast. Plus, he had some nifty shirts for the gym. Maybe we can talk Bill into reprinting those...

  • The Easton Gym (also known as the 'Screwball Gym') was started in 1938 by brothers Dale and Harvey Easton and was located on Beverly Boulevard location in Hollywood, California. It was the earliest gym ever established on the West Coast -- and is evidently still in business.

The Easton Gym was well known for the selection of unusual equipment which was designed and built by Harvey Easton and his good friend Jack LaLanne. Easton's was also the place where Vince Gironda got his start.

  • This picture represents approximately 50% of Ed Yarick's Gym out in Oakland, California. As you can see, there wasn't much to it -- a couple rows of dumbbells, a few platforms, barbells and benches -- but that is all it takes.

These spartan surroundings produced some of the greatest strength champions the world has ever known: Olympic Champion John Davis, THE clasic physique, bodybuilding champion Steve Reeves, Mr. Americas Roy Hilligenn, Clancy Ross and Jack Dellinger all trained there. As did Doug Hepburn and Reg Park when he visited the west coast.

The pro-wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura used to train there early in his career and mentions that he benched 500 pounds for the first time while training at Loprinzi's place.

One of the great training halls was the old York Barbell gym, located on Broad Street on York PA. It was an old factory converted to a gym, with nothing but a couple lifting platforms, a climbing rope, a few old dumbbells and plenty of iron.

It was hot, dark and cramped (just like a great gym should be)and the equipment was old, but solid and it produced an untold number of strength Champions in bodybuilding and Olympic weightlifting.

Here's something you don't see every day; this is a rare photograph of the workout room from The Titanic -- yes, that Titanic, the one that sunk back in 1912.

It may look familiar as they recreated it for a few scenes in the movie of the same name from a decade ago. -- Looks like they did a pretty good job.

Note the early 2-man Rowing machine and exercise bikes. It's hard to make out but those may be some Zander Machines over on the left.
