Jean Francois LeBreton was the lightweight lifting champion of France in the early 1900's. One of his greatest lifts was a one-arm dumbbell swing of 200 pounds which was made at a bodyweight of 200 pounds. -- An achievement which puts him among the strongest of all time in this lift.

I've seen the Swing mentioned in several modern courses, but it was a performed in a much different manner back in Arthur Saxon's day. Here are his instructions for performing the lift:
The muscles called into play are practically the same here as in the one-handed snatch, but the bell must be placed on end between the feet as shown in illustration. Keep the head down, then, with a perfectly straight arm, pull up, using a combination of muscular efforts and concentration as described in the snatch lift. Lean back and watch the dumb-bell with your eyes, and when it is at suitable height suddenly dip beneath same and twist your wrist violently, so that you may place a straight arm beneath the bell.

In this classic photo it's not hard to see why the great French weightlifter Ernest Cadine was so formidable. He got this 150 pound dumbbell overhead by way of the "swing". This picture was probably taken at Le Gaulois' place.

Edward Aston ran off and joined the circus at 17 years old and never looked back. Among his other feats, in 1909 he did a one-hand swing with 162-1/2 lbs. beating Thomas Inch's record. A year later he defeated Maxick to take the title of "Britain's Strongest Man", which he held until the early 1930's.

The amazing Maxick was best known for his muscle control ability, but he still moved some very impressive weights. Maxick could swing a 150-pound dumbbell - a dumbbell as heavy as his own bodyweight. He could also overhead press over 230 pounds. He was also a very good hand balancer, and could easily walk up and down a flight of stairs on his hands.

Even a hundred years later, there aren't many men who can compete with Maxick in terms of pure muscularity. His incredible condition came about mostly from practicing Muscle Control but he was no slouch when it came to moving some heavy iron either. Maxick could "swing" a 150-pound dumbbell - a dumbbell as heavy as his own bodyweight. He could also overhead "press" over 230 pounds - impressive feats for any sized athlete.

The great lifter Dick Bachtell showing his form in the one-arm dumbbell swing. Bachtell was a phenomenal one-arm lifter who was able to lift weights in excess of his bodyweight overhead in a variety of ways.
A good lift in "the dumbbell swing" can only be counted when the weight is "fixed" overhead. Many lifters loaded the back end a little heavier than the front end which was perfectly within the rules of the lift.

He has given full credit to this type of chest expander, and I am quoting him here in order to endorse what I am about to say from my own experience... "With but little training I have made records on the "dumbbell swing," the "single handed press," the "Crucifix" and on some special feats of my own. | Alfred Danks |
