Given his penchant for ripping tennis balls in half and bending railroad spikes, it is not hard to see why Vansittart was known as the man with the "Iron Grip. Though this photo is well over a hundred years old, you can still plainly see that Vansittart had the genetics to be a strength champion. You can read about some of Vansittart's favorite exercises here.

To say that the Canadian Strongman Arthur Dandurand was gifted in the forearm department would be an understatement. He not only was able to deadlift over 550 pounds with one arm but also achieved a rectangular fix with 177 pounds - an all-time record! Keep in mind that Dandurand only weighed 180 pounds or so himself.

A very rare picture of strongman George Zottman just about to perform the exercise which bears his name. George was about 55 years old at the time that this picture was taken. Look closely, years of performing Zottman curls helped him develop forearms almost as large as his upper arms.

The Oldtime Strongman George Zottman devised his own method for building forearm strength and size which obviously works very well, as you can see above. Check out a copy of Super Strength by Alan Calvert for complete instructions on how to perform the Zottman Curl. Zottman was also very good at the dumbbell overhead press, achieving lifts of 160 lbs with his right hand and two reps with a pair of 100-lb dumbbells.

| David "Bull" Bonvicin was a popular performing strongman from Montana. He specialized in many of the traditional strongman feats which focused on grip and forearm strength such as ripping phone books, levering sledge hammers and bending spikes (as he is shown doing here.) Note the above average forearm development which obviously came from frequently practicing these oldtime feats. If you want to know more about his training, Bonvicin is profiled in Physical Training Simplified by Mark H. Berry. | David "Bull" Bonvicin |

Barrel Lifting for Forearm DevelopmentI can't always say for sure how the oldtime strongmen built their strength but I can say that in the year 2008, many of the training methods they wrote about works just fine. One of those methods is Barrel Lifting which is a good way to build the gnarly, knotted foreams that the oldtimes often had. The unbalanced, unweildy load provides a shock to the system that can build incredible strength. Check out ROCK IRON STEEL by Steve Justa and Dinosaur Training by Brooks Kubik for more information on barrel lifting.
