A look at a a training session at Father Lange's Gym, at the University of Notre Dame. Lange was a great carpenter and made much of the equipment (i.e. benches and racks) shown here. Also of note are the cambered bar for squats and the large selection of Jackson Barbell plates.

The first Official 500-Pound Bench Press was performed in Vancouver, British Columbia on December 10th, 1953 by the great Canadian strength athlete Doug Hepburn. Note the primitive "bench" (what appears to be little more than a number of 2x4s nailed together), the lack of uprights, and the Jackson barbell plates.

For the better part of the last century and a half, globe dumbbells and barbells were the "art form" of the Oldtime Strongman. Many were hollow, which allowed it to be filled progressively with shot to increase the weight and produce a unique training effect. Others, like this one, were solid, and just fun to train with. Several companies used to manufacture globe dumbbells: The Good Barbell Company, The Jackson Barbell Company and, of course,The York Barbell Company who made this one.
In fact, York Barbell was still producing globes like this one until well into the 1970's. Unfortunately there are no solid globe dumbbells currently being manufactured today, so if you see any, better grab them quickly because they are exceedingly rare.

One of the most famous barbells in history is the special weight that Charles Rigoulot made his 314-pound snatch and 402-pound clean-and-jerk. Andy Jackson, manufacturer of the famous Jackson Olympic-type Barbells, is here shown with a copy of the famous Rigoulot barbell made up for the strongman 'Sailor' Jim White. The bar is 9' in length, the revolving globes are 18-inches in diameter.

If you want to know why equipment manufactured by The Jackson Barbell Company was and is so well thought of, just read the ad and see how much care went into production. Having trained with a "No. 1" set just like the one in the picture, I can tell you it was no exaggeration.

No, it's not Professor Desbonnet's Paris Gym or Professor Attila's Health Studio but the private gym of Kim Wood. Look closely and you'll see a barbell that once belonged to Warren Lincoln Travis a Jackson Barbell Set an oak climbing ladder from the Narragansett Machine company and more than one Milo Kettlebell. There's no finer gym in the land.

A famous picture of Andy Jackson of the Jackson International Barbell company of Springfield, New Jersey. For years, Andy Jackson labored by himself in his basement manufacturing high quality barbells, plates, dumbbells and the like.
He did all the milling and machining by hand. Needless to say, his equipment was very highly thought of and used by many of the top names in the strength world. If you happen to own any Jackson equipment, consider youself very lucky.
