You remember the Jefferson Lift? Well meet Mr. Jefferson. Charles G. Jefferson once partially deadlifted 1571-1/2 pounds with this special apparatus. Needless to say, all that heavy partial deadlifting did wonders for his grip strength. At a bodyweight of 170 pounds, Jefferson could also lift a 176 lb. Anvil by the horn.

Eugene Caouette is another name in the great Quebec Strongman Tradition. The giant French Canadian stood well over six feet and tipped the scales at 460 pounds! His best lifts were a Crucifix with a pair of 76-pound dumbbells, a Kennedy Lift with 1354 pounds, one-arm snatch 173-3/4 pounds (with either hand) and a one-arm clean and jerk of 213 pounds.

| The Jefferson lift, also known as the straddle lift or straddle deadlift, was a favorite leg exercise of many of the York lifters. It certainly worked for Steve Stanko who won the 1944 AAU Mr. America contest and was the first man to break the 1000 pound barrier in Olympic Weightlifting. If you train on this lift, make sure to do a set in each direction. | The Jefferson Lift |
