Now this is crazy, both in theory and in practice. That's Harry Good performing a 1-leg press with 280 pounds. His best was 380 pounds for 3 reps. It was also mentioned that while performing this lift, Harry was able to get the loaded barbell onto and off of his foot unassisted.

One of the most interesting training techniques of the Oldtime Strongmen is to use short-range movements with very heavy weights. This not only gives a super workout for the muscles, but strengthens the tendons and gives the psychological boost of being able to lift far above what you would normally be able to.
Here's John Grimek, training his legs by performing Hip Lifts with what looks like 600 lbs. or so. To find out more about how Grimek trained, you'll want to pick up a copy of the Mark Berry Bar Bell Courses (with this famous picture on the cover).

One Secret of Strength and Power... you want to get strong? Work your legs like you mean it. John Davis understood this better than most. Here he is rock-bottom squatting over 500 pounds. You sure don't see squatting ability like this very often these days... nor men with the kind of all-around strength that Davis had.

Here's a classic shot of Bob Hoffman at the old Broad Street Gym demonstrating one of his favorite exercises, squatting on the toes. That's a pretty nifty globe barbell that ol' BoHo is using, and , of course, he's wearing his trusty York Barbell Club t-shirt. The fellow on the left is Frank Findley, the great physical culture coach and gym owner from Australia.

One of Sandow's favorite leg exercises was harness lifting a heavy weight. He would adjust the length of the chain to different lengths in order to train different leg muscles. Not only was this a very productive movement in itself, it also allowed him to become accustomed to heavy weights and practice some of the feats for his strength performances.

Say what you want about modern gyms but you may not realize how good you have it. If you wanted to do the "leg press" exercise years ago, here's the setup you would need. This exercise was featured in some of George Jowett's training courses.

| The Jefferson lift, also known as the straddle lift or straddle deadlift, was a favorite leg exercise of many of the York lifters. It certainly worked for Steve Stanko who won the 1944 AAU Mr. America contest and was the first man to break the 1000 pound barrier in Olympic Weightlifting. If you train on this lift, make sure to do a set in each direction. | The Jefferson Lift |

The Kennedy Lift in ActionA look at the Kennedy Lift in action - performed by Quebec Strongman Claude "Samson" Champagne. The Kennedy lift can be a useful alternative to the traditional deadlift and many oldtimers swore by it. Nice lift - that's over 600 pounds!

| 1. Take a light barbell and place it across the shoulders or grasp a dumbbell in either hand. 2. Standing erect, raise one foot off the floor and balance on the other foot. 3. Begin the exercise by sitting down into the deep knee bend keeping the raised leg straight and pointing forward, not allowing the leg to touch the floor as shown. | Harry Good - One-Leg Squat |
5. Inhale when lowering, exhale when lowered, inhale when raising and exhale when erect.
6. Work up to 10 repetitions with each leg then increase the weight 2-1/2 pounds or 5 pounds.
7. Hold the position shown, Bending forward greatly simplifies the exercise.
