Now this is crazy, both in theory and in practice. That's Harry Good performing a 1-leg press with 280 pounds. His best was 380 pounds for 3 reps. It was also mentioned that while performing this lift, Harry was able to get the loaded barbell onto and off of his foot unassisted.

Another popular Oldtime Strongman feat was to support a heavy weight with a "leg press" of a wooden plank and a lockout with a barbell with the upper body.
The great strongman W.A. Pullum was exceptional at this feat and often used it in his performances. Pullum weighed only 120 lbs. yet was able to work up to eventually supporting nine men on the plank and three more on the barbell - a weight of over 2000 lbs.
You can also see this feat performed by Kurt Saxon, Arthur Saxon and Hermann Goerner.

The famous German strongman Karl Moerke was a man of many unusual talents. Among them, this unusual and quite impressive "leg press" support of the front end of a fire truck. The weight was said to top 4000 pounds.

Clevio Massimo, known as the "Modern Hercules" certainly earned his nickname. He 'leg pressed' eight men in the Tomb of Hercules position, held a 210 pound barbell around his neck while in a hand stand, bent nails and was also a very good wrestler. Here he presses a tremendous kettlebell.

Five decades ago, the "Leg Press" meant something entirely different. This "Leg Press Machine" from The York Barbell Company was a way to circumvent a few of the issues normally associated with heavy squatting. Note the other pieces of York Barbell training ephemera: The Calflex, Aristocrat Dumbbells, kettlebell handles, Dumbbell handles and the York Chest Crusher.

The Hammer Strength Leg Press is the very best leg press that I've ever used. This machine can also be an excellent alternative to the squat for building leg strength. Consider yourself lucky if you can find one though.

Say what you want about modern gyms but you may not realize how good you have it. If you wanted to do the "leg press" exercise years ago, here's the setup you would need. This exercise was featured in some of George Jowett's training courses.

Arthur Saxon's Leg Press Support FeatHeavy supporting feats were very popular with the oldtime strongmen. They could often support incredibly heavy weighst which always impressed the audience.
Here's Arthur Saxon supporting nine men on his feet, and two more (the other members of the Saxon Trio, Kurt and Herman) on a globe barbell held at arms's length.
It's been said that a feat such as this where Arthur Saxon held several thousand pounds was his greates strength feat, even topping his 448-Pound Two-Hands-Anyhow record.

Wilbur Miller: Leg PressWilbur Miller was a very strong lifter in the 1960's who probably didn't get as much recognition as he deserved.
Here's an impressive feat: This picture was taken on one of the lifting platforms in the Ridge Avenue York Gym. A group of lifters placed this 500 pound barbell onto Wilbur Miller's feet and he commenced to "leg press" it. Yikes!

The Leg PressThe need for intense leg training should be obvious -- But don't try this one at home! Just because you "can" do a certain exercise doesn't necessarily mean you should...
For one of the very best ways to build leg and back strength that is both safe and productive, try a Gerard Trap Bar instead.
