  • John Valentine


  • John Valentine, shown here with some of his favorite weights, was a popular strength enthusiast from Leeds, England. He was a pupil of Thomas Inch and actually had a performing strongman act along with Leo Gaudreau. In later years, Valentine imported American muscle magazines such as Strength and Health and Iron Man over to England, being the source for such material over across the pond.

  • Anvils, Horseshoes and Cannons by Leo Gaudreau


  • In the mid-1970s, noted strength historian Leo Gaudreau wrote the definitive history of Oldtime Strongmen entitled "Anvils, Horseshoes and Cannons". Copies of this very rare 2-Volume hardbound set are extremely hard to find these days although very much worth the effort and price to track down if you are so inclined. An asking price of a few hundred dollars would be a steal, considering how rare these books are.
