A buddy of mine is over in Iraq at the moment and sent me this great picture of the gym on his base. Good to know that the men and women of our armed services at least have a good place to train while over there. Interestingly, despite the extreme conditions, this setup is not all that different than many of the great gyms of the past. You certainly wouldn't need much more than what is pictured here to get damn strong - and you gotta love that badass Helicopter in the background.

Pull-Ups... Chin-Ups... whatever you want to call them they are a great exercise... And you can't beat the simplicity. This Marine is performing his pull-ups during a 2005 deployment to Camp Taqaddum, Iraq as a part of the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab's experimental "combat conditioning" physical training program.

Log Drills like this one have been used by the military for well over a century to build strength, endurance and teamwork. And they are still used today. Although if you have memories of training with a log just like this one, I'm sure they aren't fond ones... because they don't make it very enjoyable! (Which is an understatement.)
