Rope climbing has been and continues to be a very effective training method used by all branches of the military. This is a shot of a group of cadets climbing ropes at the United States Military Academy at West Point in the early 1900s.

Military leaders figured out in short order that stronger soldiers were better soldiers. Here's a look at a military training center in Paris, France, circa 1901. Note the climbing ladders in the background on the far right.

A buddy of mine is over in Iraq at the moment and sent me this great picture of the gym on his base. Good to know that the men and women of our armed services at least have a good place to train while over there. Interestingly, despite the extreme conditions, this setup is not all that different than many of the great gyms of the past. You certainly wouldn't need much more than what is pictured here to get damn strong - and you gotta love that badass Helicopter in the background.

Medicine Ball Training was a part of the physical conditioning curriculum at the U.S. Military Academy at the turn of the century. This training program was devised by Herman J. Koehler who we will cover at a later date.

Pull-Ups... Chin-Ups... whatever you want to call them they are a great exercise... And you can't beat the simplicity. This Marine is performing his pull-ups during a 2005 deployment to Camp Taqaddum, Iraq as a part of the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab's experimental "combat conditioning" physical training program.

Heavy Training for French SoldiersHEAVY TRAINING FOR FRENCH SOLDIERS
"The making of men taken from civilian life into well-trained soldiers has been a problem in England as in France. Business hours left the Frenchman with little time for exercise. Their training in the manner here shown quickly made them fit, and soon after leaving the counter, lathe, or desk they have proved themselves able to undertake with endurance the long marches and successful offensives against the common enemy with complete success. Every Frenchman entering the army undergoes a preparation in gymnastics and rope climbing as here shown."

Like many exercises, rope climbing as a means of building strength and endurance was adapted from the early physical training of the military. Thousands of years ago soldiers and warriors climbed ropes to build upper-body strength and endurance -- and many still do so today for the very same reasons.
This shot features a group of U.S Marines climbing ropes during a typical training session. It was taken on February 1st, 2006 at the Marine Corps Air Station in Cherry Point, North Carolina.

Like most gymnastic events, the Pommel Horse has its roots in military training. In this case approximating mounting and dismounting a real horse. Early pommel horses actually looked like a horse although once it was adopted into physical training the pommel horse became much more symmetrical, thereby allowing for more elaborate moves. It has been said that the pommel horse is one of the most difficult and technically demanding of all the gymnastic events. This shot was taken at the 1896 Olympics.
