  • Think you have a strong grip? The One Arm Deadlift will tell the tale. Here's a classic shot of Walt Cuzzimano lifting 420 pounds in that manner. Walt was also Mr. New Jersey in 1951 and competed in the Mr. America contest in 1952 (finishing 6th) and in 1959 (finishing 13th).

  • Dan Lurie


  • Brooklyn-born Dan Lurie won the "Most Muscular" subdivision and finished second in the AAU Mr. America contest in 1942, 1943 and 1944. He went on to become a very successful gym owner, magazine publisher and TV strongman. He also established the Dan Lurie Barbell Company which produced barbells and plates primarily on the east coast.

    As a strongman, he performed 1655 push ups in 90 minutes, a bent press of 285 pounds (at a bodyweight of 168 pounds) and backlifted 1810 pounds.

  • Mr. America 1962 Joe Abbenda


  • Joe Abbenda from Long Island, New York was a very popular and successful bodybuilder during the late 50s and early 60's.

    He began his bodybuilding career by winning the Teenage Mr. America title in 1959. The next year he finished fifth in the AAU Mr. America contest, followed that up with second place finish in 1961 and finally won the title in 1962. Abbenda also won the NABBA Amateur Mr. Universe that same year and the Pro Mr. Universe in 1963.

  • Kimon VoyagesKimon VoyagesA rare shot of the classic bodybuilder Kimon Voyages who competed in the AAU Mr. America six times without winning. His best finish was 6th in 1947 -- that was a tough one, Steve Reeves took the crown that year.

    Voyages did, however, win the Junior Mr. America in 1942 and Mr. New York State in 1948.

    It was reported that Voyages was fond of high rep squatting for leg development and conditioning. He once squatted 200 pounds for 100 straight reps.

  • Ken Hall


  • Well-known for his superb abdominal development, Ken Hall has been one of the most active bodybuilders in history winning over 250 trophies in a career that has spanned the better part of the last five decades.

    After moving to the U.S. from his native Barbados, Hall began winning many contests around the New York City area.

    His first place finishes include 1957 Mr. New York City (AAU), 1959 Mr. New York Metropolitan (AAU), 1960 Mr. New York City (AAU). He also competed in the 1960 AAU Mr. America Contest finishing 13th (also getting 3rd in the Most Muscular Sub division) and in the 1962 AAU Mr. America contest, finishing 10th.

    Ken Hall keep competing well into his 70's and won many Masters Bodybuilding titles.
