  • Casey Viator, The Colorado Experiment

  • A rare look at Casey Viator training during the Colorado Experiment. Many of the machines used during the Colorado Experiment revolved around "negative" training techniques. The one Casey is using, for example, was an overhead press machine. On the right is the infamous "Mr. Happiness" negative bench press machine. Both of these machines were prototypes and never made it to actual production.

  • The Joe Kinney Monster Gripper

  • In order to train for closing the Ironmind #4 Gripper, Joe Kinney created this unique piece of equipment, what he calls "The Monster Gripper."

The longer handle allowed him to force it closed allowing his to perform holds and severe negatives. Joe was able to work up to being able to hold the handles closed after cheating it shut. After being able to do so with the 600-pound resistance, the #4 felt like a toy. You can learn exactly how Joe Kinney trained with this gripper in his Get a Grip! DVD.

  • The Nautilus Double Chest Machine

  • It's a real shame that machines get such a bad rap these days. The fact of the matter is that the whole 'point' of a machine is to gain a training advantage which can't be had any other way.

Here's a great example: the Nautilus Double Chest Machine. The upper "fly" portion of the machine thoroughly pre-exhausts the chest muscles and then the trainee can immediately switch right into the decline press movement. Both exercises allow the upper arms to be in a position where the pectorals are fully contracted.

If you have access to this machine, count yourself lucky, there aren't many around.

  • Vince Gironda - The Iron Guru

  • Say what you like about Vince Gironda but one thing was for sure, there was never a dull moment around him. Here he gets in a little negative chin work while holding what looks to be a hundred pound dubbell - that's intense!

  • Mr. Deadlift: Bob Peoples

  • Mr. Deadlift: Bob PeoplesMr. Deadlift: Bob Peoples

On March 5th, 1949 in Johnson City Tennesse, Bob Peoples Deadlifted 725-1/2 pounds at a bodyweight of only 185. Peoples trained by himself in his basement gym which he literally carved out of rock.

He referred to his gym as "The Dungeon" and invented many of the types of equipment and training styles that are commonplace in many modern workouts such as negatives and power rack work.

In the above picture, note the overhand grip (instead of the usual mixed-grip) and the small plates tied to the bar. You can read more about Bob Peoples and his workouts in his excellent book Developing Physical Strength
