  • Gregory Paradise

  • One of the strongest men who ever lived was a man named Gregory Paradise of Hudson, New Hampshire. He could perform single-finger one-arm chins with ease, bend quarters in his teeth and was a wiz at the bent press, having the only distinction of being able to bent-press double-bodyweight.

Paradise only weighed around 120 pounds but at a professional strength show in Canada performed a bent-press with 250 pounds. After this photograph was taken the dumbbell was weighed at 203 pounds.

  • Jack LaLanne

  • At 94 years old jack LaLanne is still going strong. He once did 1033 pushups in one hour, swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf while handcuffed and towing a fleet of boats, and starred in the longest running fitness show in the history or television. Here he is as a young man working on his one-arm chinning ability.

  • Bert Assirati

  • Bert AssiratiBert Assirati

Our friends across the pond are sure to recognize the legendary British wrestler Bert Assirati who held the heavyweight championship belt for several years in the 40s and 50s.

Though he was quite stout (5'6", bodyweight of 263) Assirati was one of the strongest and most athletic individuals who ever graced the wrestling ring. He could easily perform a standing backflip, was a master hand balancer and could chin himself three times with either arm, among other feats.

  • The One Arm Chin-Up

  • The One Arm Chin-UpThe One Arm Chin-Up

It is estimated that not more than one person in a hundred thousand can perform a chin-up with one hand. Here Paul Holloway, one of the lesser-known members of the York Weightlifting team, shows the three stages of the feat.

Notice he is chinning himself with only two fingers -- he was actually able to chin himself using only one finger with ease, but had to use two for this series in order to hold himself still long enough to obtain the pictures.

In the October, 1937 Issue of Strength and Health Magazine Holloway outlines his exact training in detail: a series of progressive chin-up exercises until he was able to reach his goal. This training approach should really come as no surprise...
