  • Arthur Dandurand

  • To say that the Canadian Strongman Arthur Dandurand was gifted in the forearm department would be an understatement. He not only was able to deadlift over 550 pounds with one arm but also achieved a rectangular fix with 177 pounds - an all-time record! Keep in mind that Dandurand only weighed 180 pounds or so himself.

  • Test Your Might!

  • Take a stroll down to the carnival or the boardwalk and you might find a grip tester like this one. This particular grip tester is pretty interesting since it not only tests your crushing grip but also has a separate handle to measure your One Arm Deadlift strength as well.

  • Walt Cuzzimano

  • Think you have a strong grip? The One Arm Deadlift will tell the tale. Here's a classic shot of Walt Cuzzimano lifting 420 pounds in that manner. Walt was also Mr. New Jersey in 1951 and competed in the Mr. America contest in 1952 (finishing 6th) and in 1959 (finishing 13th).

  • Goerner's Deadlift

  • Hermann Goerner was a fan of the deadlift... every kind of deadlift you can imagine. He lifted two fingers of each hand, he lifted with only his middle fingers, and he did them with one hand. Shown here is Goerner one arm lifting a stone block of 660 German pfunds - the standard measurement at the time.

Goerner's feat was featured on an advertising poster for the Greco-Roman wrestling championships held in Dresden, Germany from September 8th to the 12th back in 1920.

  • John Y. Smith

  • John Y. Smith, shown above bent pressing a 185 lb. dumbbell, was another great strongman who was small in stature but large in strength. He was 5'7" and weighed around 165 lbs. in his prime yet could perform feats such as a right hand one-arm deadlift of 450 pounds (435 lbs. with the left), a hand and thigh lift of 1640 pounds and a press with a pair of dumbbells totaling 225 pounds. Smith was also a lifelong lifter, even winning the New England's Strongest Man Contest at 60 years of age.

  • Art Walge

  • Art Walge was a great strength athlete out of Philadelphia in the 1950's and George Eiferman's sometimes training partner. He appeared in the 1951 feature film 'Quo Vadis' in the part of Croton and also did a bit of pro wrestling as "The Cardiff Giant." Big Art had a pretty strong pair of mitts as evident by this 400 pound one-arm deadlift.

  • New England's Strongest Man Contest 1926

  • One of the first strongman contests in this country was "New England's Strongest Man" contest, which was sponsored by the Boston Globe in 1926. The contest consisted of four lifts:

  • Two hands continental jerk
  • Two hands continental press
  • Two hands dead lift
  • Right and left hands dead lift

  • When the dust settled John Y. Smith was the winner by 15 pounds. He was sixty years old at the time.

  • Art WalgeArt Walge

One of the greatest grip exercises is also one of the simplest: the one arm deadlift performed with an Olympic Barbell.

Here's Big" Art Walge doing just that: deadlifting 400 pounds with one hand. Art stands 6'6", weighs 275 and held the World Record for the bent-arm pullover.

  • Sandow's One Arm Deadlift

  • Eugen SandowSandow's One Arm Deadlift

Sandow was a master of many different kinds of strength feats. Don't know if he ended up lifting this 1500 lb. block of sandstone (doubtful) but he sure looked like he could.

While you may not have a stone like this around, the one-arm deadlift while straddling two benches or platforms to increase the range of motion is an excellent exercise. Normally I don't recommend straps but Sandow can get away with it when he's lifting that kind of weight.

  • The One-Arm Deadlift

  • L.A. Chappell deadlifts 448-1/2 pounds with one arm in the 1920's. He would go on to lift over 500 pounds in the same manner.

The one-arm deadlift is a fantastic grip developer and a worthy addition to your training program.

    Note: the cambered bar.

  • Developing Grip Strength by David Gentle and David Webster

  • Developing Grip Strength by David Gentle and David Webster "Developing Grip Strength" Stronger hands and forearms have always been a very important (but often overlooked) area of training for every athlete.

Published back in 1986, Developing Grip Strength by David Gentle and David Webster became an instant classic as it was the first "book" ever written specifically on the subject of grip training.

You'll be lucky to find a copy these days -- I've seen them listed at several hundred dollars on some of the used book sites.
The two Davids do not disappoint -- citing a number of classic sources, they cover an incredible array of topics:

  • Phonebook Tearing
  • Crushing Bottle Caps
  • Hand Balancing
  • Ripping a Deck of Cards in Half
  • Hand Grippers
  • The Wrist Roller
  • Wrist Curls and Reverse Wrist Curls
  • Sledge Hammer Leverage Exercises
  • One Arm Deadlifts
  • Pinch Gripping
  • Grip Training with Chest Expanders
  • Isometrics
  • Nail Bending and Bar Bending
  • Single Finger Lifts
  • Wrist Wrestling
  • Training with Bricks
  • and more!

  • While this book is quite rare, you can learn how to train for many of these feats with the four different courses in our Classic Grip Course Collection
