  • George Lurich: Overhead Support

  • George Lurich was as good of a strongman as he was a wrestler... and he was a terrific wrestler. He had many incredible feats to his credit but this was perhaps his greatest: a one-arm overhead support of over 700 pounds!

  • One-Arm Pushups

  • One important thing to keep in mind about strength training is that much of the "secret" of getting very strong does not have to do with exotic lifts that you never heard of before but basic lifts that you probably already know, just done correctly with plenty of effort. Here's a great example: want to know how the great strongman Clevio Massimo developed his incredible arm strength? "One-arm Pushups" ~ an exercise you can do pretty-much anywhere.

  • Just Another Day At The Office

  • When you are serious about training it's hard to pass by a row of dumbbells without at least giving some a try... Here Bob Hoffman got in a few impromptu repetition bent presses with a 100-pound dumbbell on a visit to the Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington sometime during the fall of 1953. Bob's best bent-press was 282 pounds although he credits much of his progress in this department by practicing with the 248-pound Cyr Dumbbell.

  • Apollon

  • Something that you may not have noticed is that the great French Strongman Apollon rarely performed two-arm lifts, instead preferring to train with heavy barbells or dumbbells by lifting them with each hand individually. Even a hundred years later that's still a great way to get strong...

  • Ralph Halpern

  • Ralph Halpern performs a... well I don't know what you call this lift but it looks pretty tough. It's a sort of variation of the one-arm get up. Note the classic weights both in use and stacked neatly against the wall. This picture was taken while Ralph was training at Sig Klein's Gym.

  • Otto Arco

  • Otto ArcoOtto ArcoOtto Arco doing what he does best: looking impressive without doing much at all.

In 1907, Arco became the second man in the world to hoist double bodyweight overhead with a 278-1/2 pound lift at 138 pound of bodyweight. He was also the first to one hand snatch over bodyweight with a 145-pound lift.

Arco was a great wrestler, gymnast and hand balancer. He and his brother Pete performed with several different circuses in the US and abroad.

  • Odd Object Lifting in Ancient Japan

  • Barrel lifting goes back a little farther than Dnosaur Training...

The Japanese painter Hokusai is best-known as author of the woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and his most recognized print The Great Wave of Kanagawa.

Among his many drawings was this one, "Sakadaru o sashiageru otoko" showing a man lifting a sake barrel overead with one arm.
This drawing was completed sometime around the year 1810 but the one-arm press is still a great exercise.

  • Dumbbell Swing!

  • The great lifter Dick Bachtell showing his form in the one-arm dumbbell swing. Bachtell was a phenomenal one-arm lifter who was able to lift weights in excess of his bodyweight overhead in a variety of ways.

A good lift in "the dumbbell swing" can only be counted when the weight is "fixed" overhead. Many lifters loaded the back end a little heavier than the front end which was perfectly within the rules of the lift.

  • Jack Walsh

  • Jack Walsh Dumbbell JerkJack Walsh

Jack Walsh from Trenton, New Jersey, is the strongest man you've never heard of.

Over his career he performed all kinds of crazy strength feats, including lifting elephants, towing trains and letting trucks run over his body. At a bodyweight of 190 pounds, he even broke Louis Cyr's backlift record.

Anyhow, here's Jack Walsh jerking a 230-pound dumbbell overhead -- That's damn strong! Do you know anybody that can jerk more than bodyweight overhead with one arm?
