  • Julius Cochard

  • The French strongman, Julius Cochard, possessed an unusual level of strength and endurance. His best known feat was to carry a 220-pound sack on his shoulders for a distance of 112 miles. It took him just under a week to cover that distance. He was also very adept at feats of finger strength, being able to snatch and swing 110-pound dumbbell with only one finger.

  • Arthur Snell, The Northwest Hercules, does one-finger clean and press with an 85-pound dumbbell. You will have to try this lift to fully appreciate it.

  • Charles Phelan

  • How about that kettlebell? Charles Phelan billed himself not as the World's strongest man but the World's most entertaining strongman as he told jokes between his strength feats while he performed at Coney Island. He weighed only 140 pounds but held five world records: a one-finger lift of 506 pounds, 700 pounds with two fingers, a hand and thigh lift of 1125 pounds, a hip lift of 1600 pounds and a backlift of 2500 pounds. Phelan was taught how to be a strongman by Warren Lincoln Travis and was a good friend of Vic Boff.

  • Finger Lifting

  • Finger LiftingFinger LiftingFinger Lifting is always popular due to the fact that a person can truthfully prove he can lift more with one finger than another can lift with both hands.

Beyond a doubt, the greatest men in the world on this exercise who can handle the greatest poundages are Warren Lincoln Travis, Adolph Nordquest, John Y. Smith and Ottley R. Coulter, who, at 132 pounds could out lift many heavyweights.

All four men here owe most of their success in this lift to their knowledge of muscular leverage and know just how to apply their muscular power.
