George Lurich was as good of a strongman as he was a wrestler... and he was a terrific wrestler. He had many incredible feats to his credit but this was perhaps his greatest: a one-arm overhead support of over 700 pounds!

Joe Bonomo famous strongman, actor and movie stunt man often lifted "human" weights instead of barbells. Here, he gives a friend a lift.
Interestingly, lifting human weights is often much more impressive to an audience than lifting twice as much iron. Bonomo starred in a number of early silent movies and serials. He was Lon Chaney's stunt double in the 1923 version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

| How did the oldtimers train with Kettlebells? The answer might surprise you. In his book The Textbook of Weightlifting, Arthur Saxon lists a few of the different exercises he used: the crucifix, one arm press, and several grip and forearm exercises. Of course, kettlebells also worked pretty well for Combination feats just like this one. (I think that's Kurt Saxon being pressed overhead.) | Arthur Saxon |

| Heavy one-arm overhead supports were very popular with oldtime strongmen since they could work up to some truly impressive weights which always wowed their audiences. Sandow was able to lift a horse in this manner. Here Anton Matysek supports well over a quarter ton overhead. | Heavy One-Arm Overhead Supports |

| Among posing, and several other amazing feats of strength, Eugen Sandow used to finish his act by carrying a horse from one end of the stage to the other. I'm sure that one brought the house down and must have been quite a sight to see. You may not have a horse around to lift but heavy overhead supports are still a great way to build upper-body strength and power. I read that John Grimek worked up to being able to support over 1000 pounds overhead with the use of a power rack. | Sandow Lifts a Horse |
