Dudley Allen SargentGoing back though all the posts on this bog I realized -- amazingly -- that I had not done a post specifically on Dudley Allen Sargent so away we go:
Sargent began his career as the gymnasium director at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine and later, more famously at Harvard where he ran The Hemenway Gymnasium. He was very much ahead of his time, noting that while Calisthenics and Gymnastics had their uses, they also had limitations, and so was among the first individual to devise a series of machines which addressed these shortcomings.

The Yale GymnasiumAnother fine example of an incredible Gymnasium was the one at Yale University, shown here in a few rare turn-of-the-century photos. This grand gymnasium was located at 55 Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven, Connecticut and was under the direction of Mr. William Gilbert Anderson, a famous physical education teacher and author.

Dio Lewis was an early physical culture pioneer who was outspoken on the role of temperence, clean living and physical training as a part of education. His system of gymnastics was eventually adopted by schools and laid the groundwork for modern physical education.
