How do Shaolin Monks build their incredible levels of grip and forearm strength? ...with the simple wrist roller. Of course, this fellow prefers to do his wrist roller training while standing on large water jars (to increase the range of motion) and using a stone padlock for the weight.

Another interesting martal art training method is to build up hand strength and conditioning by driving them into sand... then rice... then gravel... then iron shot. As the size and density of the striking material increases, the hands follow suit. Keep in mind that this is simply another form of progression, the principle behind all successful physical training.

They may not lift barbells but they still lift "weights". This particular Shaolin Monk is shown building shoulder and upper-body strength with a wooden log. ~ Any kind of object can build strength, so long as it is trained with in a progressive manner.

How do Shaolin Monks train their abs? Here's one way: this fellow is hanging upside down with his legs over a tree branch. He fills a small cup with water from the jar below him, sits up, and dumps it into a bucket which hangs above. No sets and reps needed, the workout ends when the bucket is filled.

The Shaolin Monks referred to traditional stone lock training as Shi-Suo and have been using them for centuries. These stone weights are lifted, pressed, thrown and caught in a variety of ways in order to build upper body strength and stamina. Based on how they are used, stone locks are obviously a distant relative of the kettlebell.

Shaolin Monks are not "Strongmen" per se, but they certainly share a lot of similarities, one of which is training for one specific feat for years until it is mastered. This one is referred to as "One Finger Zen" or a handstand held on a single finger!
