  • Staff Sgt. Moss

  • Here's a look at Staff Sgt. Moss from about a hundred years ago. He actually placed very poorly in some early physique contests... As you can see his physical condition was superlative, it was the tattoos on his arms from his travels around the world that the judges did not like and marked him down for!

  • Vintage Weightlifting Medal

  • A vintage weightlifting medal from -- I would guess - around the early 1900s. This certainly looks like something Sandow or Staff Sgt. Moss would have worn.

  • Staff Sgt. Moss

  • Staff Sgt. Moss Alfred Moss joined the British Army at 16 years old but did not begin serious weight lifting until 25. After only six months of training he was able to lift 162 pounds overhead with one hand. Aside from many traditional strongman and weightlifting feats, Moss was also very adept at gymnastic feats.

Staff Sgt. Alfred Moss was an early bodybuilder, circa 1900, although his tattoos often disqualified him from several contests despite his obvious muscularity.

Sergeant Moss was considered the Strongest man in the British Army, once jerking a 56-pound blockweight 100 times in 2 minutes 52 seconds.

He went on to write several training courses covering the parallel bar, vaulting horse, indian clubs, rings, tumbling and other gymnastic subjects.
