  • William Barker

  • Too old? 75-year old William Barker shows he's still "got it" by performing a crucifix with a kettlebell handle loaded to 50 pounds hanging from each thumb. Barker had previously been featured in LIFE magazine. In 1901, Mr. Barker was a gold-medal winner at one of Sandow's competitions.

  • The York Leg Press Machine

  • Five decades ago, the "Leg Press" meant something entirely different. This "Leg Press Machine" from The York Barbell Company was a way to circumvent a few of the issues normally associated with heavy squatting. Note the other pieces of York Barbell training ephemera: The Calflex, Aristocrat Dumbbells, kettlebell handles, Dumbbell handles and the York Chest Crusher.

  • Owen Carr and Al Tauscher

  • A selection of great oldtime weights: barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, kettlebell handles and a thick-handled exhibition bell. On the left is Owen Carr, a physical education director in the Portland, Oregon School district for over forty years and the man that organized the first weightlifting team in the state of Oregon.

On the right is Al Tauscher, Carr's friend and training partner. Both strongmen were regularly featured in early issues of Strength Magazine. This picture was taken around 1916.

  • Kettlebell Handles

  • Kettlebell HandlesKettlebell HandlesOne of the the unique pieces of training equipment that you don't see often these days are ketlebell handles.

These were U-shaped handles that could be retrofitted onto dumbbells creating a much more versatile piece of equipment.

Kettlebell handles are particularly useful for shoulder specialization work.

  • The Kettlebell Handle

  • The Kettlebell HandleThe Kettlebell HandleKettlebells have taken many forms throughout the years.

From the classic Globed MILO Kettlebells... to the Blockweights that were so common in many Oldtime Strongman acts of decades past... and to the many other unique forms which will be featured at a later date.

One type of kettlebell that you don't often see mentioned much is the plate-loaded kettlebell handle, which has a very long history by itself.

Of course, this type of kettlebell was used a bit differently in terms of training than what is often recommended these days.
The Kettlebell Handles show above were manufactured by the MILO Barbell Company in the late 1920s.
