"EUGEN SANDOW - IN ACTION!"

Eugen Sandow
In an interesting bit of serendipity, during his travels in America Eugen Sandow heard of Thomas Edison and eagerly awaited the opportunity to shake the hand of the great man.

Sandow found himself on the east coast at the end of one of his tours and his opportunity came on March 6th, 1894 when Sandow and a few associates visited Thomas Edison's early motion picture studio in West Orange, New Jersey.

It was here that Sandow became the subject of one of the earliest motion pictures ever created. The video shown above shows a brief clip of Sandow posing and some of his muscle control act.

With this clip Sandow became the first bodybuilder ever caught on film. -- Even from these brief clips, we can see that Sandow was quite the athlete.

The clip below was shot a bit later, in 1903 by William K.L. Dickson, Edison's chief photographer.

It's pretty amazing that we can see this footage today, well over a hundred years after it was originally shot.
