This is the first book that any strength athlete or bodybuilder should buy. McCallum has an
entertaining writing style, gives the reader exactly what he needs and provides a number of
workout regimens so that anybody can be successful at building muscle. McCallum's ideas predate
the current steroid era that has made bodybuilding distasteful and dirty. The concepts in this
book work and require nothing more than hard work and a good diet. BTW, the other two books are
"Dinosaur Training" by Brooks Kubik and "Super Squats" by Randall Strossen. Follow the advice in
these books and you can't help but get big and strong!

John McCallum was my monthly reminder to be all that weight training would allow me to be...
Without any doubt, he was my earliest and strongest influence and one that has endured. Dr. Ken Leistner |

This is a great book. I loved it. it ranges for so many different specific goals and routines.
whether you want to have great forearms, get stronger, build bulk, or have supplement info.
This book covers it all. And not in a broad, generalized view, but rather specifically for
guys that have a definite decision on why they are weightlifting. It is also very easy to
read and understand and will last you for years. You must get this baby! Bill Jackson Houston, Texas |

Very amusing reading, with tales of "Uncle Harry" and an assortment of wannabe musclemen
populating a series of short articles written for Strength & Health magazine between 1965 and
1972. It's remarkable how many of the fundamental concepts of strength training were well known
thirty five years ago. (Also interesting to note is how clear on the concept Mr. McCallum was
regarding the dangers of smoking. Hard to square this level of knowledge in the late 60s with
the current craze to sue cigarette companies for "hiding the truth")
Anyway, there's all sorts of good stuff in here about diet, lifting, aerobic exercise, the
whole package. A very worthwhile read.

There's not much more to say about this book than, "This is the only book on weight training
anyone who isn't using steroids will ever need". It's filled with no-nonsense information on
getting bigger and stronger. It's sad that a manual like this isn't in every gym around. How
long will people think they can buy a miracle cure, pill, potion or powder? You'd think hard
work and sensible training information had fallen by the wayside in the quest for size and
strength, but thankfully this book is in print.

This book is simply a CLASSIC SUMMARY of proper ideas in resistance training from decades ago,
that still proves useful and effective in the modern day !!!!
I loved the style it was written in, the subject content, and the useful advice and theories it
portrays.... Some adjusting to suit the modern day knowledge, like less volume and less days/frequency
of training.... But it still stands HEAD AND SHOULDERS over 90% of the garbage fed to the resistance
trainees of today !!!! WELL WORTH THE COST AND TIME TO READ!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It amazes me how this book still speaks
volumes of information even though it was written so long ago. John McCallum
was a master at conveying informative knowledge though a very entertaining medium.
The stories of his days with his friend Ollie, his daughter's boneheaded boyfriend
Marvin, and the various "gym owners" who dispense sagely advice to the stereotypical
"skinny kid" are highly entertaining. What's more, the stories contain timeless advice
to get you into the best shape of your life! It amazes me how there really is no new
thing under the sun, as McCallum advises the reader to work hard, eat lots of protein,
work hard, cut carbs, work hard, make sure to get plenty of nutrition and rest... Did I
mention hard work? If you're looking for a no-nonsense approach of how to build a
better physique without all the modern fluff and latest whizzbang program, check
out this book. This is especially true if you're looking for some advice before
the wide use of steroids began. You'll read about the old school greats who
accomplished great feats of strength through an all-natural regimen. If you
work out or have any interest in bodybuilding/weightlifting, I highly recommend
that you purchase a copy of this timeless classic! Kudos to Dr. Randall Strossen
for making John McCallum's works available to the newer generation! I guarantee
you will not be disappointed!

Everything you need to know is in this book. McCallum was way ahead of his time. In addition to his very entertaining writing
style, the reader will benefit greatly from John's wisdom. The trick is to read the book through
several times and to read between the lines. What John doesn't write is every bit as important
as what he does write.
Every time I read this book, I become more amazed at what I missed the last time I read it.
