Joe Nordquest lifts 388 pounds in a shoulder-bridge press
|
Joe Nordquest was one of the strongest men in the world in the early part of the 20th century, despite losing
part of his left leg in a childhood accident.
He could bent-press 277 pounds with his left hand and in 1917
performed a "shoulder bridge press" of 388 pounds (breaking
Arthur Saxon's record of 386 pounds.)
On May 3rd, 1916 Joe Nordquest performed a one-finger curl and holdout with a 70 lb dumbell.
Joe Nordquest also was very well-known for his
hand stand push-ups and could perform 28 repetitions at a bodyweight of 168-pounds.
He could even jump off a 30-inch table onto the floor while maintaining a hand stand as well as perform
a one-hand handstand while holding a 100-pound
dumbbell in the other hand.
Nordquest also possessed tremendous wrist strength.
He was the only man besides Paul Von Boeckmann who could lift
Von Boeckmann's 80-pound iron "Indian club," by grasping the club from the small end with his hands close together (in baseball bat style)
and levering it up over his shoulder.
Even Eugen Sandow was
not able to budge the club though Charles Atlas was able to tip it slightly (at a later date).
Joe's brother Adolph Nordquest was also a well known strongman.
