Butty Sugrue and Friends

Posted on Monday, April 25th, 2022 by John Wood
Iron Strongman and publican personality Michael “Butty” Sugrue (who we have covered several times before on this Blog) is shown here doing a bit of showing off with a couple friends: actresses Rosita Yarboy and Felicity Bacpour. This picture was taken on June 7th, 1971 on Shepherd’s Bush Green in London. Looks like Butty may be getting a bit of a spot on one end from Felicity.

Butty vs. Motorcycle
Here’s our favorite publican Butty Sugrue pitting his choppers against a 500 c.c. motorcycle going at full throttle. Butty stood his ground for a few seconds but the rope actually snapped! This event took place in front of the Admiral Nelson pub, in Kilburn, London on Oct. 10, 1965.

Butty Sugrue: Barrel Lifting

Ireland’s Strongest Man, Michael “Butty” Sugrue, used to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by performing feats of strength in his pub in Kilburn. One of them was to lift a two-hundredweight barrel of beer overhead. Sugrue was a colorful character and led a pretty interesting life, among other accomplishments, he promoted the Muhammad Ali versus Al “Blue” Lewis fight in Croke Park in Dublin in July, 1972.
