Hjalmar Nedahl 1908 Tobacco Card

The British American Tobacco Company was formed in 1902 when the British Imperial Tobacco Company merged with the American Tobacco Company. The first chairman of the B.A.T, James ‘Buck’ Duke was ahead of his time in terms of marketing and merchandising — in each package of machine-rolled cigarettes could be found a trading card from and/or for countries throughout Europe.

The 1906 set featured Danish athletes, among them the above example, Hjalmar Nedahl, the club-swinging world champion in 1907 and 1908 who was shown sitting amongst his clubs and a few of his medals. (Also, unlike most cigarette cards, these were blank on the back.)

John Davis and BAWLA Plates

Posted on Friday, August 14th, 2015 by John Wood
Here’s a rare look at the great John Davis. Hard to tell were this shot is from though. This image was actually from a German tobacco card from 1952. If you take a close look, those are BAWLA (British Amateur Weight Lifting Association) Plates so it may be from the 1948 Olympics, held in London, where Davis took home the gold medal. Problem is, it doesn’t match up to any other shots we have seen from that time period. Either way, another look at Mr. Davis in action is always a good thing.
